Aztec athletic teams earn playoff berths
The Pima spring athletic teams are finishing their 2008 seasons and six of the eight teams are making plans to participate in their 2008 NJCAA National Championships. One team is still in the hunt as they prepare for their Regional playoffs and a shot at their big dance.
Men's Golf The men’s golf team qualified for their 2008 NJCAA Championship tournament to be held at River Golf Course in Huntsville, Alabama, May 17-24. The team will host and take part in the Region 1 Championship May 2-4, before they head off to Alabama. Women's Golf The Aztec women’s golf team has qualified for the 2008 NJCAA National Championships to be held at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Florida, May 12-15. The Pima squad will be led by 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-Region players Codie Wintrode and Caitlin Rutherford who placed 4th and 6th individually at the ACCAC/Region 1 championships earlier this week. Teammates BreAnn Richter and Sandy Biestek took 2nd Team nods for their performances in 2008 and they finished 8th and 10th in the conference championship. Softball The Pima Softball team is off to Prescott May 2-3 for a three-team, double elimination, Regional Championship tournament. The Aztecs are the third seed behind top conference finisher Yavapai who sealed the one-seed on the final day of the season when they beat Eastern Arizona College who dropped to the two-seed. Men's Tennis Men’s tennis is also off to the 2008 NJCAA National Championships as they will travel to Plano, Texas, May 12-16. The Aztecs qualified for nationals and finished second at the ACCAC/Region 1 Championship behind the play of Nick Caldwell who finished with the conference singles title. Women's Tennis Women’s tennis will play in, and host, their 2008 NJCAA National Championship tournament May 4-10 at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson. The Aztec women struggled through an injury riddled 2008 but finished strong at the regional tournament behind the play of their # 1 singles player, Ali Brackey. Men's and Women's Track and Field With two meets remaining on their schedule, the Aztec men’s and women’s track teams have qualified 15 competitors, in 14 different events, for their national championships. Eight of the men have qualified for the national championship to be held in North Plains, Texas, May 15-17 while seven of the ladies team members have also qualified to make the trip to Texas. With the one remaining meet, the Aztecs hope to make travel plans for a couple more competitors before the May championship.
