College Launches New Avionics Program
February 20, 2008Pima Community College is launching a new program in Avionics, the electrical and computer systems which control and guide modern aircraft. The Avionics program is designed to meet a growing local demand for aerospace technicians skilled in navigational, control and communications systems. The College currently offers Aviation Technology degree and certificate programs in the areas of aircraft structural repair and in airframe and powerplant technology. The College will offer three Avionics certificate programs and an Associate of Applied Science degree. The certificates in Avionics and Avionics Technology are designed for immediate employment as an avionics apprentice or technician. The Avionics Recurrent Training certificate will recertify avionics installers for airlines, airports and other agencies. Employment in the aerospace industry in Pima County is expected to increase approximately 20 percent over the next five years. According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security, the median salary in aviation technology for the Tucson Metropolitan area is $44, 240. Pima Community College’s Aviation Technology classes are offered at the College’s hangar and classroom facilities at Tucson International Airport.
