Sawma Appointed Dean of Adult Education

Pima Community College has appointed Dr. Joseph Terry Sawma as Dean of Adult Education.  Adult Education includes GED, Citizenship, English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Skills programs, as part of the College’s Community Campus.  The College’s Adult Education Program serves more than 12,000 students annually.

Prior to his position at Pima Community College, Dr. Sawma was part of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District from 1996-2008.  He was most recently their Vice President for Student Services, Continuing Education and Workforce. He was served as the District Director for New Program Development position, Associate Dean for Social and Health Sciences and Vice President for Continuing Education and Workforce.

Dr. Sawma has held various research positions, including Program Director for Biotechnology at Kingwood College in Kingwood, Texas. He was the dean of Applied Science and Technology at Palo Alto College in Texas; and served as the National Research Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Education, Advanced Technology Education at Texas State Technical College.

Prior to moving to Texas, Dr. Sawma was an Associate Professor and Program Director of Medical Technology at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, New York.

Dr. Sawma was the President of the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges from 2006-2007.

Dr. Sawma received his Ed. D. in Higher Education Administration from Baylor University, his M.A. and B.S. in Biology from the State University College of New York at Buffalo.
