PCC Student Wins National Essay Contest

April 21, 2008
Pima Community College student John Windham has won the 5th annual Community College Baccalaureate Association essay contest.

The winning essay detailed the importance of obtaining a four year degree at a community college.

The essay can be found online at http://www.accbd.org/pdfs/winner_2008.pdf.

Windham stressed the importance of providing access to higher education and bachelors degrees to more students.  In his essay, Windham described community colleges as four-year institutions that allow students to work at their own pace and schedule, while being able to afford an education at a place that offers open admission and caters to the needs of nontraditional students with non-scholastic obligations.

Windham is a 4.0 G.P.A. fulltime student at PCC, an E.M.T. in the Corona De Tucson Firefighter Academy, the International President of Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Beta Chi Chapter, and the chapter’s Vice President of Relations.

As winner of the essay contest Windham received $1,000 and an all expense paid trip to the eight annual CCBA conference.  The College also received $1,000 to benefit Student Government.
