Lecture Explores Islamic Architecture Influence
June 12, 2008Pima Community College will present "Architectural Legacy: Islamic Influences in the American Southwest," on Friday, June 20. The presentation is free and open to the public. Featuring R. Brooks Jeffery, Coordinator of Preservation Studies at the University of Arizona, the presentation is part of the Discovering Southern Arizona lecture series. The "Architectural Legacy" presentation will take place at the Pima Community College Community Campus, 401 N. Bonita Avenue, on Friday, June 20, at 2:00 p.m. The exotic influences of Islamic cultures are still present in the American Southwest. They are evident in ornamentation, architectural forms, and urban open spaces of the Spanish Colonial period. The presenter, R. Brooks Jeffery, Brooks has spent his career documenting, interpreting and disseminating the significance of built environments throughout the world, including the Middle East, Spain, Latin American and the U.S. Southwest. He is coordinator of the multi-disciplinary graduate program in Preservation Studies at the University of Arizona.
