Experimental Aircraft Association Funds PCC Aviation Technology Scholarships

September 22, 2011

Tucson, AZ – The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association has donated $1,500 to the Pima Community College Foundation to provide scholarships to Aviation Technology students.

As funds are available, a $500 scholarship will be awarded to one student in each concentration (Airframe and Powerplant, Structural Repair and Avionics). A student may use the scholarship to pay for tuition, fees, books and/or A&P testing fees. Scholarship recipients also are invited to attend a meeting of the local EAA group, Chapter 81 (www.eaa81.org).

“The quality and success of any educational program requires strong partnerships with the larger community. The scholarship established by the EEA is a good example because it directly supports student learning and shows EEA’s commitment to work with our Aviation Technology Program.”  Dr. Johnson Bia, President of PCC’s Desert Vista Campus.

To be eligible, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 credits, with at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) . Students may apply for the scholarship by completing the PCC Foundation scholarship application, online at https://scholarships.pima.edu/stars.

“We are excited about our scholarship donation and we look forward to what a big difference it will have in each recipient’s life.” said Duane Boyd, President of EAA Chapter 81. “We hope that our association with Pima’s Aviation Technology Program will be mutually beneficial for both parties for a long time to come.”

According to Federal Aviation Administration data, 100 percent of PCC students who took the FAA Airframe and Powerplant licensing tests in 2010 and 2011 passed, surpassing the 95 percent and 96 percent national averages, respectively.

Pima’s Aviation Technology Program is nationally respected, and Pima is the only school in the United States offering training in the specialized field of Structural Repair. The program’s Aviation Technology Center (ATC), a state-of-the-art training facility, is on the grounds of Tucson International Airport.

EAA (www.eaa.org) is made up of members with a wide range of aviation interests and backgrounds. It was founded in 1953 in Milwaukee, Wis., by a group of people interested in building their own airplanes.

The PCC Foundation, which was Established in 1977, secures and manages private philanthropic support for Pima Community College. Last year, the Foundation awarded nearly $1 million in scholarships to more than 1,600 PCC students. For more information or to make a tax-deductible donation, visit the PCC Foundation website.
